Founded in 1897, Victoria University of Wellington is a global-civic university located in the heart of New Zealand’s vibrant capital city. At its three central campuses, the University offers more than 170 undergraduate or postgraduate programmes, from pathway to PhD, across eight teaching faculties.

Approximately 22,000 students, including international students from more than 100 countries, comprise the University’s diverse student community. The University values meaningful involvement in the social, cultural, and economic life in the Wellington region and in internationalisation initiatives. The University takes pride in the excellence of its research, teaching, and transformative engagement that is both locally relevant and internationally significant.

According to the NZ Tertiary Education Commission’s latest Performance-Based Research Fund quality evaluation round, Victoria University of Wellington is New Zealand’s top-ranked university for intensity of high-quality research. The University is ranked in the top 2 percent of the world’s 18,000 universities and the top 1 percent of universities worldwide for 18 subjects according to the 2022 QS World University Rankings.

In the 2022 QS Stars audit, Victoria University of Wellington retained its outstanding Five Stars Plus rating as one of only 19 other universities in the world with this rating. The University prides itself on upholding a standard of excellence in providing a great student experience both inside and outside of the classroom.

In additional to receiving Five Stars Plus in the 2022 QS Stars audit, the University earned five stars in each of the eight audited categories: arts and culture, subject ranking, employability, facilities, inclusiveness, internationalisation, research, and teaching.

Victoria University of Wellington’s three campuses in Wellington are all within walking distance of each other, and easily accessible via public transportation.

The Kelburn campus is the central hub of the University. It is home to the University’s main services and facilities, as well as the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences, the NZ School of Music, the Faculty of Graduate Research, and the Faculty of Science, Health, and Engineering. Perched on a hill overlooking the city harbour, the Kelburn campus is always abuzz with activity. The Student Union building, recreation centre, coffee shops, and library provide great opportunities to socialise and study with fellow students.

The Pipitea campus is in the heart of Wellington’s government and central business district. You can study at the Wellington School of Business and Government or at the Faculty of Law in historic buildings just across the road from Parliament, the Wellington High Court, and District Court.

The Te Aro campus is centred in the lively Cuba Street district and is home to the University’s Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovation. The campus’ specially designed facilities include collaborative studio spaces, high-tech 3D printers, and New Zealand’s largest robotic arm.

Victoria University of Wellington is proud to keep the marae (Māori meeting house) at the heart of the University’s identity, honouring New Zealand’s bicultural heritage and the Treaty of Waitangi. The University is also participating in a Living Building Challenge that draws together sustainable building practices and Māori knowledge, creating a Living Pā that will enhance the marae's teaching, learning, and research space and create a sense of community around the marae for all students.
