St. Thomas University

Canada Shortlist

Overview

We believe smaller is better. Our small size is the reason we are able to give each one of our students a big university experience full of opportunity. Located in Fredericton, New Brunswick, St. Thomas University is a small, primarily undergraduate university dedicated to excellence in liberal arts education.

Founded in 1910, St. Thomas University is Canada’s only exclusively liberal arts, primarily undergraduate university. Located in Fredericton on Canada’s east coast, the university overlooks the beautiful St. John River Valley. Fredericton is a friendly college town (population 85,000) that is home to two universities. New Brunswick has three airports with daily flights connecting to international destinations.

Achieving excellence in undergraduate liberal arts education is St. Thomas’s highest institutional priority. Bachelor of Arts students can chose from more than 30 academic disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. The Bachelor of Education program encourages cross-disciplinary approaches to teaching and learning. The Bachelor of Social Work and the Mi’kmaq/Maliseet Bachelor of Social Work programs teaches students to address the needs of clients and to act as agents of change. A Master of Social Work program launched in Fall 2021.

Small classes encourage students to participate in discussions with their peers and professors. Professors are distinguished scholars, authors and commentators and use a variety of teaching approaches – lectures, readings, discussions, group activities, debates, research assignments, writing, and on-line discussions.

Faculty research has eight focal areas: narrative studies; global and international studies; Indigenous studies and Indigenous knowledge; health, wellness, and aging; social justice, human rights, and identities; environmental sustainability and climate change; arts and culture; and New Brunswick studies. The university holds Canada Research Chairs in global and international studies, and physical culture and social life, as well as a health research chair in community health and aging. An annual Student Research and Ideas Fair encourages student research, and many students are employed as research assistants.
Distinguished alumni include author David Adams Richards, former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and children’s author Sheree Fitch.
