Summary

Humber’s Theatre Arts - Technical Production diploma program provides you with the skills and knowledge needed to launch your career working in the performing arts industry. By learning how to build props, costumes and set pieces; paint scenery; incorporate light, sound and projections into a theatrical performance or live event; and serve the collaborative team through stage management, you will have the foundational knowledge to work in the entertainment industry.

We focus on creative work in a collaborative artistic environment with professional discipline, broad-based training and education in all areas of technical production for the performing arts, while instilling a commitment to lifelong learning in this constantly changing field. Our faculty have substantial industry experience and full-time professional careers in the performing arts industry. We teach production primarily through the lens of theatrical productions since theatre is the most holistic amalgamation of the skills and techniques required by all performing arts. During your time in the program, you will also have opportunities to collaborate and be exposed to some of Humber’s other exciting creative programs. Collaborations with external partners further round out your overall experience and provide networking opportunities to help kick start your career.

Career Outcomes

With more than 90 venues in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and many more producing companies, Toronto is the third-largest theatre centre in the English-speaking world. Toronto is also the source of theatre productions, concert tours and industrial shows that tour nationally and internationally.

There are many opportunities behind the scenes for technicians and craftspeople, and our graduates make careers as scenic carpenters and prop builders, conventional and moving light technicians, sound technicians, wardrobe personnel, riggers, scenic painters, and assistant designers.

In the management realm, our graduates work as part of a stage management team and as technical directors. Our graduates also work in related areas of the entertainment industry including cruise ships, theme parks, ice shows, concert tours, industrial presentations, specialized service companies, and film and television. Some graduates form companies collaborating with performers and designers to create original work. Your career may also take you to more senior management positions or to further training to hone your skills in a specialized area of the industry or in design.
