2-Year Full-Time & 3-Year Part-Time Option
The MS in midwifery is a distance education program in midwifery for Registered Nurses (RN) and CM Pathway applicants who want to become midwives. The Midwifery Institute offers a 2-year and 3-year progression. The 3-year option follows the same curriculum, except that clinical courses are delayed until the third and final year.

The MS in midwifery program begins with online studies and then integrates online study with hands-on clinical practice. You will learn the science of midwifery through readings, seminar discussions, problem-based learning tutorials, writing assignments, simulated clinical, project-based service learning, quizzes, case studies, peer reviews, and examinations. You will learn the art of midwifery through hands-on practice during clinical placements under the direction of a qualified midwife preceptor. Additionally, students have the option to undertake an interprofessional global health experience.

Though primarily an online program, you will attend two on-campus intensives to practice hand skills, engage in clinical reasoning and critical reflection, and have time to bond with classmates and faculty. Upon graduation, you will be eligible to sit for the national examination of the American Midwifery Certification Board to earn the credential CNM or CM.

Problem Based Learning
A major component of the program is Problem Based Learning tutorials. This approach organizes small student groups with one faculty member to discuss specific, real-world clinical scenarios. Students “meet” in online video conference for thoughtful discussions about physiology, sociology, and the art and science of midwifery practice. Using clinical, case presentations, students reflect on the role transition to midwifery.

Problem Based Learning methods are used in medical, midwifery and nursing schools around the world.
Due to VISA restrictions, we are only able to accept U.S. citizens and permanent residents into our program at this time. Foreign-educated Midwives, who are also U.S. permanent residents, are encouraged to apply.
