Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and other microbes. The science of microbiology revolves around two general themes:
Understanding basic life processes
The application of our understanding of microbiology for the benefit of mankind
Our microbiology major is an interdepartmental major that offers educational opportunities in various areas of microbiology. Students also take classes in biology, chemistry, physics, and math, and will do meaningful research in faculty labs. The microbiology electives are flexible, allowing students to focus on specific areas of interest.
A Bachelor's degree in microbiology prepares you to continue on to medical or graduate school, or enter the job market where microbiology graduates are in high demand in areas that include:
Medical, dental, veterinary, public health and pharmaceutical careers
Research and development positions in academic, government, or private industry labs
Environmental careers
Positions in emerging fields such as biofuels and bioenergy
Food industry and food safety
