Summary

Your major in Latin American studies will move you to explore peoples, languages and cultures of Latin America. You will gain an understanding of the cultures of Latin America and a proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese. In addition, you will work closely with faculty whose research involves Latin American languages, culture and landscapes.

You will enroll in courses from multiple disciplines to examine the world through the lens of social justice and human rights. The major includes theoretical and methodological courses, comparative courses and focused topical courses that provide you with rigorous analytical skills to investigate and understand the experiences of diverse populations.

Career Outcomes

The Latin American studies major incorporates both language and content courses, so you'll emerge with the skills necessary to work in Latin America or in U.S. organizations with Latin American clients. Opportunities for majors are found in U.S. banks and commercial firms with Latin American branch offices, the travel industry, publishing companies, research organizations and U.S. governmental agencies such as the Department of State, Agency for International Development and U.S. Information Agency.
