Summary

Build the foundation for a power engineering career with our heavy oil operations technician (HOOT) program.

In less than year you can become a qualified 4th class power engineer. That’s an entry to jobs wherever there’s a steam power plant. Our unique programs also includes heavy oil operations.

Discover the essentials of:

It comes from hands-on training in our Husky Energy Power Engineering lab. It's where you’ll learn and practice job ready skills. Learning continues in an industry practicum.

Before your December practicum, you’ll take a first step towards certification. You're prepared to write Part A of the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) 4th Class exam. You can challenge Part B at the end of the program.

Continue your power engineering path at Lakeland:
• 3rd class training. Choose between the 2nd year of our heavy oil power engineering (HOPE) program, or taking 3rd class online
• 2nd class online

Career Outcomes

Graduates from the HOOT program typically find work as:

• Field operators in the oil industry
• Fourth Class Power Engineer (after Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) certification) in heating plants, industrial power plants or pulp mills

Academics, GPA

Minimum 50 Marks in English (12th). Minimum 50 Marks either Physics or Chemistry (12th). Physics preferred. Minimum 50 Marks in Math (12th). Diploma in Electrical & Mechanical Student can apply.

English requirements

IELTS: 6.0 (with no band less than 6.0) TOFEL: PTE: Overall PTE Score 53 and above with nothing less than 50 in any module.
