The Environmental Studies and Sustainability (ESS) program provides students with the in-depth knowledge, multidisciplinary perspectives, and critical skills needed to address the complex environmental problems of today and of the future. The ESS program explores disruptions to Earth’s global life-support systems, threats to biotic and human communities, the challenge of environmental justice, and both the obstacles to and the promise of environmental sustainability. The Program offers two majors: a BA in Environmental Studies and Sustainability and a B.S. in Environmental Science.
The Environmental Science major emphasizes appropriate skills and experiences for science-oriented careers and graduate study. Students are introduced to the major in ENV 150/Great Challenges in Environmental Science, take core courses in Biology and Chemistry, Environmental Science courses, and electives offered in other majors. Students complete the curriculum by taking ESS 400/Environmental Studies and Sustainability Capstone with Environmental Studies and Sustainability majors and Environmental Science majors.
